Speeding fine

Post by sim » July 27th, 2009, 5:11 pm

We have just received a speeding fine from Menorca from when we were there at the beginning of June (using a hire car). It appears to be from dgt although it is all in spanish. Does anyone know where we stand legally on this. Are we obliged to pay it?

I'm afraid you are. Up until recently the hire co's were able to get them quashed but now the authorities are sending them out to the offenders. I've just spoken to a friend, one of his customers had to phone the Spanish consulate in London to get info on how to pay it. Remember you only have 30 days to get the discount for prompt payment.

Spanish Embassy in London
39 Chesham Place
London SW1X 8SB
Tel. 020 7235 5555
Fax: 020 7259 5392

Spanish Embassy in Edinburgh
63 North Castle Street
Edinburgh EH2 3LJ
Tel. 0131 220 1843/ 1439/ 1442
Fax: 0131 226 4568

Spanish Embassy in Manchester
1A Brook House, 70 Spring Gardens,
Manchester M2 2BQ
Tel. 0161 236 1233/ 1262
Fax: 0161 228 7467
I only let him think he's in charge.

Thanks for that, I did a bit of research on the internet and there is a lot of fraudulent speeding fines being sent out, so how do I know it is legit?
The offence was on 1st June and we have only just received the fine so we have missed the reduced rate and now have to pay the full 100euros!

The Spanish consulate will send you a translation of the original, if they haven't got the original it's a fake.

I can pay it over here for you, just send me the ticket with a €200 note attached

The friend we spoke to above, Philip, who you know well Jan, also told me the postie who delivered a couple to him the other day also had another 60-70 for a couple of other larger car hire co's.

For anyone who doesn't know, there are two fixed speed cameras on the ME 1 at Es Mercadal in the center of the Island. One as you approach from either way

I have marked them on this map http://www.menorca-net.co.uk/maps/menor ... st_map.php in RED

I know about those Steve, are there any others? I am sure I always went through them slowly. Think I would have had the fine by now had I flouted the law...
